2024 FPI Projection: 9-4

2024 Over/Under Total: 9.5


BIGGEST GAME: Clemson (October 5)

This was a close one between Miami and Clemson, but at the end of the day there's a still a good chance that whoever wins between Miami and FSU will have to go through Clemson again, so let's see if FSU's 31-24 overtime win over the Tigers was a one-year thing or the start of a back-and-forth rivalry. It was a gutsy win by FSU, who needed a defensive touchdown and a last-second missed FG from Clemson to get to the final score. I thought it was a good win because Clemson saw FSU coming, had a great gameplan and still came up short. Now FSU knows it can beat Clemson and will want to do it again in front of the home crowd. 


TRAP GAME: at SMU (September 28)

SMU is a first-year ACC program and while I think the Mustangs have a very good chance to be a top five team in the conference this year, they will also deal with some growing pains later in the season. This game, however, is in September and SMU's conference opener. FSU has been hunting for a while, but on the final Saturday in September, the Seminoles will be the hunted in Dallas. Let's see how they handle that role. 


POTENTIAL UPSET: UNC ( November 2)

Now the shoe has been on the other foot in this series over the past few years. FSU salvaged what really could have been a disastrous season in 2020 with an inspired win against the then-top 10 Tar Heels at Doak Campbell Stadium. Then the following year the Seminoles beat UNC on the road, giving Mike Norvell's process of growth more creditability. Now FSU is the team that has the expectations and the Tar Heels are in a bit a rebuild situation with quarterback Drake Maye off to the pros. By this point UNC should be whatever they are going to be and if they will catch the Seminoles in the week between road games against Miami and Notre Dame.

By this point most of you know the rules, but things changed a little bit. Instead of putting out a team of 46 (23 on each side of the ball), we've just got 24 players -- 12 on offense and 12 on defense.  The Group of Five All-Florida HS Team MIGHT be here in a few days. 2021 Transfer Portal Class Breakdown (Florida State Seminoles)

One of the many offseason projects I will be working on is a breakdown on transfer portal classes two years in the rear.  In 2021 the transfer portal was still a bit of a new thing and coming out of pandemic there were a lot of moving parts in college football, so I don't think student-athletes and coaches realized the true power of the portal.  Two years out allowed the full impact of a transfer class to be felt. 2021 Transfer Portal Class Breakdown (FIU Golden Panthers)

Butch Davis came out the gate pretty strong at FIU. He was 23-14 with three bowl appearances in his first three seasons. Then the pandemic came and he lost 16 of his final 17 games. FIU was fading a tad before COVID-19, so maybe Davis had already peaked. I am curious how he could have managed the portal if he knew how it was going to work. It's an interesting "what if" to think about.
